# Crop

Explore a variety of presets to quickly apply different styles and looks to your photos in Luminar for Desktop.

The **Crop** tool lets you refine your photo’s composition, alignment, and perspective. You can choose a specific aspect ratio, straighten the horizon, correct perspective, rotate or flip the image, and manually fine-tune the crop for the desired result.

#### **How to Use**

Depending on where you plan to use your photo — on the web, social media, or in print — you may need a specific aspect ratio or composition. The Crop tool gives you precise control over the final framing.

To crop a photo:

1. Select the **Crop** tool.
2. Choose the desired aspect ratio under **Ratio**, or select **Free form** to crop without a fixed ratio.
3. Drag the edges or corners of the crop frame to resize the cropping area.
4. Reposition the image within the crop frame as needed.
5. Use the additional alignment, perspective, or rotation controls if necessary.
6. Select **Apply** to confirm your changes or **Cancel** to discard them.

#### Ratio

Use **Ratio** to control the proportions of the cropped image. Choose from commonly used aspect ratios depending on the intended format of your photo.

* **Original.** Preserves the photo’s original aspect ratio while allowing you to crop unwanted areas around the edges.
* **Free form.** Lets you freely resize the crop frame without maintaining a fixed aspect ratio.
* **Predefined ratios.** Choose from common formats such as **1×1, 2×3, 3×2, 3×4**, and other available ratios.
* **Show All.** Displays the complete selection of available aspect ratios.

#### Horizon Alignment

Use **Horizon Alignment** to straighten a photo when the horizon or other horizontal elements appear tilted.

* **Auto.** Automatically detects and straightens the horizon.
* **Angle.** Manually rotates the image to fine-tune its alignment. Adjust the slider until the horizon or other reference lines appear straight.

The grid overlay can help you evaluate horizontal and vertical alignment while making adjustments.

#### Perspective Correction

Enable **Perspective Correction** to correct perspective distortion and straighten lines that appear tilted or converging. This can be especially useful for architectural photos and other images with prominent vertical or horizontal lines.

#### Rotate & Flip

Use the **Rotate & Flip** controls to quickly change the orientation of your photo.

* **Rotate Right.** Rotates the image 90° clockwise.
* **Rotate Left.** Rotates the image 90° counterclockwise.
* **Flip Horizontal.** Mirrors the image from left to right.
* **Flip Vertical.** Mirrors the image from top to bottom.

#### **When to Use**

The Crop tool is ideal for improving composition, removing distracting elements near the edges, straightening a tilted photo, correcting perspective, changing image orientation, or preparing a photo for a specific format.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://support.skylum.com/luminar-for-web/how-to-use-luminar-for-web/crop.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
